Are you close to making a decision on which type of carpet you want and you’re leaning on maintenance as the tiebreaker between Berber or Plush? Or do you already have both types of carpet in separate rooms in your house and want to know the different ways to approach them when they need a cleaning? Either way, Everclean Carpet & Upholstery would like to give you a heads up on how to maintain your Plush or Berber carpet in Sterling Heights, Michigan!
Berber
Berber carpet can be tricky to clean depending on which type of fiber your Berber carpet is made out of. Olefin attracts the oils from your skin and clothes and can be a nightmare to get out, while Berber carpets made primarily out of nylon are manageable. Since the oils from your shoes can be so destructive to a Berber carpet, it helps to keep a mat at the entrance of your front and back doors, and also to reinforce a strict “no shoes allowed on the carpet” rule. It’ll save you a lot of headaches later.
When it comes to vacuuming your Berber carpet, beware of vacuums equipped with a rotating brush! These brushes can harm your carpet by snagging the loops. It’d be wise to invest in a high-suction vacuum without a brush.
If a spill unfolds right in front of your eyes, don’t panic, just cover it in baking soda, vacuum it all up after 20 seconds or so, and then repeat the process a couple times. This will be your best defense against stains. You’ll want to blot the area with a towel or cloth afterwards to pick up any and all moisture leftover. Applying a mixture of white vinegar and water to a stain works best if the stain has set in because you weren’t at the crime scene at the time of the spill.
Plush
Just like with Berber carpets, you’ll want to keep mats outside of your doors to fight off everything your shoes track in. Plush carpets can actually be very easy to clean as long as they are maintained properly. The flat and even surface of Plush carpet makes for no-hassle stain removal and promotes a long life if, again, maintained properly.
Vacuuming your Plush carpets in Sterling Heights, MI on a daily basis is a start. This will negate against the soil that can build up in the fibers of the carpet. Having it professionally dry cleaned twice a year is strongly recommended, or even three to four times if it is accumulating a lot of dirt. For new stains, we suggest going the cold water and a sponge route. For old stains, use a cloth or sponge and dab it with potent liquid detergent.
